If you’re on RT-1 (Golden Circle), heading East (from Reykjavik) the turn off onto a dirt road is 138 km NE of VIK (800 m past the junction of RT-998) or if you’re coming the other way it will be on your right, 17.4 km from Hof. If you only have a short period of time or are not an avid hiker, this is a good stop on your tour. This Glacier is one tongue of the massive Vatnajökull glacier which makes up a large portion of the National Park. The Svinafell Glacier (Svinafellsjokull) in Iceland sits along the southern edge of Skaftafell Nataionall Park. The museum put a small altar inside Núpskirkja church, which dates back to 1789 and belonged to the church Stóra-Dalskirkja. In 1930 this little turf church became the first building in Iceland to come under the care of the National Museum of Iceland and to be declared as protected. It wasn't until 200 years later, or in 1961, that it was re-consecrated after having been repaired in 1958-1960. For a while, it was used as a storehouse. Núpsstaðakirkja was deconsecrated in 1765 by a letter from the King and was most likely used as a farm church or an oratory after that time. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first church on this site was most likely built before the year 1200. It was built no later than 1657 and the oldest part of the church is from the 17th century. The little turf church is in very good condition.
